  Indian Institute of Management Calcutta

 

The Indian Institute of Management Calcutta , was established as the first national institute for Post-Graduate studies and Research in Management by the Government of India in November 1961 . From its very inception as the first IIM, pioneering management education in India, the Institute has been a melting pot of academic talent. Eminent academicians such as Douglas McGregor, Miles Kennedy, Paul Samuelson, Jagdish Sheth, Ravi Mathai, Ashok Mitra, Barun De, Kamini Adhikary, Eshwar Dayal, Warren Bennis, Jati K. Sengupta & Gouranga Chattopadhyay have all been part of the institute.

The foundation stone of the Joka campus was laid by Sri Morarji Desai, the then Dy. Prime Minister of India on Dec 15, 1968. The Institute moved to its present campus in 1975.

The institute is located in its own sprawling 135 acres campus in Joka, away from the hustle and bustle of the metropolis. IIM Calcutta has one of the most breathtakingly beautiful academic campuses in the country - spotted with scenic locales, seven lakes, exotic birds, and a miniature Howrah Bridge.

The institute offers the following programmes of study:

  7. Executive Program in Business Management - One Year Part Time [EPBM]

IIM Calcutta shifted to its new campus at Joka, a suburb of Calcutta, with the admission of the twelfth batch in 1975. As of 2006, forty one batches have passed out of this unique campus, loved for its lakes and its emphasis on freedom of thought, and renowned for its quantitative bent of mind. Alumni are working in government, the corporate sector, academia or forging their own path.

IIM Calcutta was one of the first Indian colleges to implement an extranet connecting faculty, students, alumni and corporates - a nice demonstration link is provided on its website. IIM Calcutta is also known for its cultural pursuits - the annual cultural festival Carpe Diem, and music bands famously named after the public transport bus routes that 'connect IIMC to civilization' - Joka Band Stand and 12-C (pronounced Baro-See).

INCA, or  is a voluntary student body that works closely with NGOs in the Kolkata region.

Some of the most notable alumni from IIM Calcutta include Indra Nooyi and Sriram Parasuram. Recentely an alumni of IIM Calcutta from the class of 2004 made a world record by climbing the seven highest peaks of seven continents in minimum time till date. Malli Mastan Babu an avid adventure sports enthusiast started his own adventure sports firm after finishing his summits.
